September 4th at Museum of Science & History, Pink Palace
During September and October, the Museum of Science & History – Pink Palace will be embracing the theme CREATE. The public is invited to join the Museum as it explores creativity in its many forms through events, activities and programming.
Visitors can shop for creations of local artists and craftspeople at the Museum’s Crafts Fair Pop Up Shop to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week through December. The Pop Up Shop which includes more than 30 artists is curated by Memphis Modern Market. No admission is required.
As part of the Pop Up Shop, each Saturday, beginning September 19, visitors can enjoy demonstrations from some the Pink Palace Crafts Fair’s master craftspeople and purchase their creations.

“A lot of people were disappointed that the Pink Palace Crafts Fair and Cooper-Young Festival had to be cancelled this fall because of the pandemic. We’re hosting our Crafts Fair Pop Up Shop at the Museum to give folks a chance to enjoy demonstrations from artists and craftspeople, and of course to get some early holiday shopping done,” said Bill Walsh, marketing manager at the Museum.
Light & Color
In addition to featuring the creativity of local artists and craftspeople, the Museum will be giving visitors a chance to show off their creativity as well. There will be a CREATE Workshop – Light & Color hosted by Dr. Ana Dobias of the University of Memphis Physics and Engineering Department to be held September 19th at 1PM. The Museum education staff and Dr. Dobias will demonstrate how light refracts, reflects, and breaks into colors with hands-on experiments including creating your own Newton Disc and a cyanotype printed tote bag.
Cost of the workshop is $30. For more information, visit https://www.memphismuseums.org/pink-palace-museum/events/light–color-workshop/
Free Make & Take Activities will be available on the Museum mezzanine Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30PM through October, starting September 5th. Participants will be able to use recycled materials to make their own sea creatures as a tie-in to the Museum’s new 3D documentary Great Barrier Reef opening September 19th at the CTI Giant Screen Theater.
Community Scavenger Hunts
As Memphis is home to many impressive visual artists, the Museum will be hosting Community Scavenger Hunts to allow participants to learn more about the murals, installations, and sculptures that have grown out of Memphis’ artistic community. The Hunts will include riddles, photo ops, and more. Participants will compete with other teams in an Amazing Race style challenge every other Saturday.
Community Scavenger Hunts will include – The Art of Memphis I – Downtown: September 12th and 26th and The Art of Memphis II – Midtown and East Memphis: October 10th and 24th.
