Dear Friend of the Orpheum Theatre Group:
I have important news to share with you about Come From Away and our upcoming 2020-2021 Season! Please read on. One of the most difficult aspects of this pandemic is a lack of certainty, which leads to a feeling of no control. As a presenter of Broadway shows, there is great uncertainty in our business, as well as a lack of control of when productions can begin to tour again. In fact, recently you may have heard that the Broadway League announced theatres in New York City will remain closed through Labor Day.
First and foremost, the Orpheum is committed to you, our patrons. We are committed to bringing you the shows we promised. We are committed to honoring our pledge of a safe environment when you return to the theatre. And we are committed to sharing with you, in the most transparent way, any changes we make to our scheduled performances.
Towards that end, I am writing to tell you, due to the pandemic and a lack of information about when shows will be able to tour again, we have altered the dates of our season and moved performances out of the fall of 2020. We have extended our season until November of 2021 to accommodate these changes.
We have been working diligently with the producers of our touring Broadway shows and I am happy to share that we have not lost a single production; not Come From Away nor any shows from the season we announced in March.
The Orpheum Broadway Season will now begin in December of 2020 with Jesus Christ Superstar. It will end after Disney’s The Lion King in the fall of 2021. The complete schedule is included below. Season Ticket Holders who have already renewed do not need to take any action. Ticket holders for Come From Away will receive an email soon with further details.
When I announced the 2020-2021 season in March, I was confident that the productions would happen as planned, but our world has changed significantly in a very short time. I hope you agree with me that given all we have learned since the announcement, this new schedule allows us a higher level of comfort that these magnificent productions will entertain and enlighten us this coming season.
Finally, we are making plans to welcome you back to our facilities. Our reopening may happen before these Broadway shows begin in December. Therefore, this announcement applies only to our Broadway shows and does not affect any concerts or other events scheduled at the Orpheum or Halloran Centre. We will continue to follow local government directives in our decision-making, as well as the recommendations of the CDC and Shelby County Health Department. We hope to be able to host concerts and events this fall.
In closing, I want to thank our Broadway season sponsors, SunTrust now Truist and the Memphis Area Honda Dealers, for making our Broadway season possible. And my sincerest thanks to you, our supporters and patrons, for your commitment to the Orpheum, which allows us to bring the best of Broadway to the Mid-South.
See you at the theatre soon!
